If I was e-mailed a virus to my hotmail account and I used the public library's computer to open?

the file (accidently, of course), would I risk infecting the library's system ?

no it won't affect your hot-mail account, and if they have a virus detector on it , it would have come up right away . If there is none .. then --depending on what type of virus it is -- yes it probably did.





Just don't use it in case. Most of the time library computer doesn't have all the security measures like people at home do .





How do I know ?? well after some people in my computer security class i teach asked the same questions like yours , so for fun I went to our library and pretended i was going to surf the net, when they weren't looking i clicked their control panel and looked down the list , 5 out of 5 computers had no virus or security installed and their firewall wasn't activated . ( so i activated it hee hee)





and recently I went on vacation and there were 2 libraries .. both the very same , no virus detector and only 1 firewall partially on.





and TONS of spy-ware !!


actually library computers are a bad place to use your email. they are the prime targets of hackers .


Because of the fact they know libraries don't get into the keep your comp safe, also they know MANY diferent people sign in to their mail and banking accounts.


I heard of hackers programming library computers because alot of people check their mail on it and they have the passwords to all. ESPECIALLY online bank accounts.


and some of the library users are hackers getting it hooked up via the Internet.

Reply:Yes for the first question, it is possible if they did not install proper antivirus.





Most likely not as you did not open the file on Hotmail's servers, you opened it on the poor library's system. Great way to get banned from the library :)
